Trusted by 100+ partners across Kenya's travel and tourism industry

Overview

Tsavo West National Park, part of the larger Tsavo ecosystem along with Tsavo East, is a stunning expanse of wild Kenya—an untamed land of volcanic landscapes, rolling savannahs, ancient lava flows, and verdant springs. Located in southeastern Kenya, near the border with Tanzania, the park covers over 9,000 square kilometers, making it one of the largest and most ecologically diverse parks in the country. Its dramatic scenery includes the rugged Shetani Lava Flows, and the lush Mzima Springs.

The park is a haven for big game and is considered a stronghold for iconic African wildlife. Visitors may encounter large herds of elephants, often covered in red dust from the iron-rich soil, as well as lions, leopards, buffalos, and cheetahs. The Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary, a fenced-off area within the park, provides protection to one of Kenya’s remaining populations of endangered black rhinos, making Tsavo West an important center for rhino conservation. Beyond the big mammals, Tsavo West is a birder’s paradise, with over 400 recorded bird species, including hornbills, kingfishers, sunbirds, starlings, and birds of prey like martial eagles and bateleurs.

With its rugged beauty, fewer tourists compared to other parks, and a strong sense of untamed wilderness, Tsavo West appeals especially to adventurous travelers seeking solitude, dramatic scenery, and authentic African safari experiences.
