A Mirror of Wilderness Beauty.
Lake Manyara National Park, located in northern Tanzania along the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, is a compact yet ecologically diverse wildlife sanctuary spanning approximately 330 square kilometers, with Lake Manyara itself covering nearly two-thirds of the park's area. Established in 1960 and easily accessible from the city of Arusha, the park offers an impressive range of habitats, including lush groundwater forests, acacia woodlands, grassy floodplains, and the expansive soda lake with which each supports a wide variety of wildlife.
It is particularly famous for its unique population of tree-climbing lions, large herds of elephants, and a rich primate population, especially baboons. The alkaline lake attracts thousands of flamingos and over 400 bird species, making it a prime birdwatching destination, especially during the wet season. Visitors can enjoy game drives, birdwatching, canoeing when water levels permit, and cultural interactions in nearby villages like Mto wa Mbu. The park also features a canopy walk that offers a unique aerial view of its vibrant flora and fauna. With its tropical climate, the best wildlife viewing occurs during the dry season from June to October, while the wet months offer a greener, more tranquil experience. As part of Tanzania’s popular Northern Safari Circuit, and managed by TANAPA, Lake Manyara National Park plays a significant role in conservation and eco-tourism, offering travelers an immersive and varied safari experience within a relatively small but richly endowed area.
