Trusted by 100+ partners across Kenya's travel and tourism industry

Overview

Nyungwe National Park is a vast and biologically rich rainforest located in southwestern Rwanda, bordering Burundi to the south and Lake Kivu to the west. Covering over 1,020 square kilometers, it is one of the oldest and most well-preserved montane rainforests in Africa and a vital part of the Albertine Rift, known for its exceptional biodiversity and endemism.

The park is a haven for primates, home to 13 species, including a large population of chimpanzees and the Ruwenzori colobus monkey, which is often seen in troops of over 300 individuals. Nyungwe also shelter smore than 300 bird species, 75 mammal species, and over 1,000 plant species, many of which are endemic or rare. Its dense rainforest, mist-covered mountains, and network of trails make it ideal for eco-tourism activities such as chimpanzee tracking, canopy walks, birdwatching, hiking ,and botanical exploration.

Protected since 2005 and managed in partnership with African Parks since 2020, Nyungwe is not only critical for biodiversity conservation but also serves as a major watershed, supplying water to about 70% of Rwanda. Its stunning scenery and scientific value make it a UNESCO World Heritage Site (designated in 2023) and one of the top rainforest destinations in Africa.
